Perhaps this is my favorite of all of Jesus’ “I AM” statements as it answers my own fear and that of all of humanity. Since the day we are born, we are haunted and hunted by the fear of death. As John Donne stated, “Never send to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee.” Death is the wage of sin, and a constant in all of life’s span for every person. It directs how we live and our consideration of time and reality. But, it does not have the last word as a secular society would suggest.
Jesus came to bring life…abundantly. He came to give us a new perspective on how we live in the here and now. He came and died and rose again so that death would not have power over us. Everything Jesus taught and lived was about life, it is the reason that He came, so that we may have life and have it abundantly. (John 10:10)
While the devil would love to keep us enslaved to death, Jesus counters with the gift of true, abundant and eternal life. Through the Spirit’s empowerment, we live accordingly and have the great privilege of spreading this news to a world that is otherwise dying. And so we live in this truth now and forever, to the glory of God!
